We entered the home stretch today with a flurry of
activity. We were finally over the
prepping and the scraping so the noise levels were significantly reduced. No
more grinding – much to Gavin’s relief. Painting today was more touch up and
final finishing, and wood work on the doors became more about finishing off and
adding door furniture, all new door handles and nice new door hooks to retain
the doors when open, rather than the large rocks that were previously the norm.
We also finished all the window louvres, as extra hands came
onto that task, and we got all the security mesh installed. As we got to the
final louvres we found out that we were 6 louvres short. Chilly had done the
counting so accurately, the fact that we broke a few (5) along the way will
mean a quick dash to the hardware shop on the last morning. Paul (Roger) became
an expert glass cutter today, as the final classroom, which was the one that
needed a fair bit of reconstruction of the window frame, meant that we had to
shorten the louvres for 3 windows (24 louvres). This was achieved with no
breakages.
As the main tasks were finished, everyone got into cleaning
and fixing up the little things. Tow previously unused storerooms are now
clean, the shelving fixed, and painted to brighten them up and make them more
user friendly. We also got the
electrician back to install lights in the storerooms and additional lighting in
the toilets. We unlocked a sports resource room and discovered a treasure trove
of sports gear that had fallen into disuse. The room was emptied, cleaned and
restocked after the old unusable gear was chucked out.
Along the base of the windows we placed a final strip of
wood and then added coat hooks so the kids will have somewhere to hang their
bags etc. We also cleaned the Principals office and painted the ceiling.
So a big day.
Tomorrow we have a few hours to finish of the cleaning of the classrooms
and we will be finished. Yippee. Then we will have the formal hand over at 1pm
and we will tell you more about that in the next blog.
